I haven't eaten for 7 whole days! Look what happened!! 😳

My doctor gave me the bad news at the end of a routine checkup a few years ago. My blood pressure and cholesterol were dangerously high even with maximum doses of medication. All the signs pointed to me now in my 60s heading down the path that too many men in my family had taken.

One of my grandfathers died young of heart disease. My father suffered the first of two heart attacks at age 58 and eventually died of a stroke at age 70. At age 64 my brother died of a massive heart attack. With more medications ruled out I had only one option: lose weight—at least 40 pounds.

I had been gaining weight gradually. A little (eventually quite a bit) of excess weight didn’t affect me. I was strong and active but lately I noticed that hiking biking and cross-country skiing all of which I loved were becoming more difficult and less enjoyable. The person looking back at me in the mirror no longer matched the image I had of myself. My first grandchild had recently been born which gave me another very important reason to want to stay. And I admit there was an element of vanity in it. I decided to do something I had avoided my entire life: I went on a diet.
