Paul Greenberg is an award-winning freelance writer with over 15 years of experience writing for The New York Times National Geographic The Guardian Food & Wine EatingWell and over 20 other magazines and newspapers.

“Heart disease? Come on that’s so old-fashioned.” Or so I thought as I rode a conveyor belt toward a CT scan in one of those boring medical imaging facilities I’d spent my 51 years avoiding. I was pretty sure this was just another test that didn’t really apply to me one of many my doctor had added to the growing list of tests we Americans are subjected to as we move through the decades.
