The Challenge of Eating Alone in Public
Last night like many nights before I ate alone. In public. On purpose. I sat at the bar in a reputable Italian restaurant and ordered a bowl of spaghetti and a glass of wine. I chose a spot in the middle of the bar where it was not crowded and where people were polite but not necessarily chatty with the bartender/waitress. No one came up to me during my meal which was delicious.
This is not a complaint. This is more of a boast. I like to eat alone. Not always but often. Why? Let me list the reasons.
I talk to people all day long. Whether I’m reporting for a story or answering one of the ten thousand questions that come up every day as the editor-in-chief of a national food website I’m in almost non-stop contact with other people every day for 10-12 hours. After work I’m often at events that require constant social interaction. Don’t get me wrong: I love talking to people. I have a very active professional and social life that fulfills me on many levels. But sometimes I need a break.
