In iOS 15, Apple's weather app received a major design overhaul, thanks in part to a number of features brought by the popular weather app Dark Sky, which Apple acquired in 2020. One of these features is the inclusion of weather maps, and this article explains what they are and how to use them.

Three full-screen weather maps are available in Apple's native Weather app. They provide an overview of forecasts for local precipitation, air quality and temperature. Note that air quality information is limited to Canada, mainland China, Germany, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

You can access maps by tapping the small folded map icon in the lower left corner of the Weather app, or by scrolling down on a forecast screen, tapping the default temperature map, then tapping on the battery to change the display to precipitation or air quality.

Precipitation maps are animated and show the path of upcoming storms as well as the intensity of rain and snow. The progress bar at the bottom shows you the 12-hour forecast, which you can pause using the Pause button or cycle through by dragging the progress point with your finger.

The battery icon in the upper right corner can be tapped to switch to air quality or temperature maps, which also give you an overview of conditions in and around your area. The icon above allows you to switch between geographic regions in your forecast list, while the icon at the top allows you to zoom in on your chosen area.

Note that you can zoom in or out as much as you want on any of the maps to preview the chosen weather data.
