We all receive iMessages that we'd like to address later. If you open it accidentally, it's easy to forget about it later. iOS 16 now fixes this problem by allowing you to mark it as unread after opening it.
To do this, go to Messages and swipe right on a thread until the unread icon appears or long-press on the thread and select Mark as unread. The message will now be marked as unread again.
Keep in mind that when you open the message, the sender will see the status "seen". Marking it as unread does not change the status from “seen” to “unseen”.
