![iPhone 14 Satellite SOS tested and reviewed: how it actually works!](https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/M2m89XASOdo/hqdefault.jpg)
Starting today, users in the United States and Canada will be able to use their iPhone 14s to trigger an emergency SOS, even in areas without cellular coverage. It does this by using a network of 24 satellites in low Earth orbit that the iPhone can connect to. This allows you to send very short, low-bandwidth emergency text messages to ground stations, which in turn are routed directly to emergency responders or to Apple relay centers, which coordinate with responders emergency. Although today's launch is limited to the United States and Canada, starting next month it will open up to select countries in Europe (more on that in the next section).
Currently, this feature is only for emergencies – and sending a selfie text message, or even a short "goodnight" message, doesn't qualify. Instead, it's meant to direct you directly to the first responders who can get you out of the mess you've gotten yourself into. This is pretty much similar to other platforms that already exist today, such as Garmin's inReach devices or SPOT devices, both of which use satellites.
