We thought we’d seen it all but a new food trend has emerged that’s making us question everything. On TikTok and Instagram more and more people are trying an unusual protein-rich ingredient in their morning coffee: raw eggs not just cracked but also crushed in their coffee supposedly for extra flavor. But while it’s new to us content creator Jimmy Johnson explains that this viral twist actually goes back centuries.

“The origins of this drink aren’t really what you’d expect” he shares in his Instagram video that’s garnered over 7 million views. “Some people say it originated in Norway some say it originated in Sweden but apparently it was a huge thing in the American Midwest around the 1800s.”
