Molds are fungi that can be visible to the naked eye but they can also be invisible. When you see mold on food that’s only part of the story. It probably means that there’s a large root system in the food itself: think of it as a network of blood vessels. The visible mold is the stem of the mold coming up from the surface of the food with fluffy spores attached to it. If you were to look at that moldy piece of bread under a microscope the mold would look like little mushrooms coming up from the surface.
