If you’ve just gone vegan or are trying to cut down on your animal products you may have heard the rumor that not all sugar is created equal. Some sugar is refined with animal products making it unsuitable for vegans! Is this true or is it sweet?

Sugar in the United States comes from two primary sources: sugar cane or sugar beets. As it turns out one step in the sugar cane refining process involves carbon particles or bone char the electrically carbonized bones of cattle. Sugar cane is run through it to remove impurities and whiten its appearance. The product is then crystallized spun dried and packaged — ready for your grocery store shelves.
