Reversing type 2 diabetes starts with ignoring the guidelines | Sarah Hallberg | TEDxPurdueU

Take a look around your local office or grocery store. You may not know it by looking but if your neighborhood is like the national average 1 in 10 people you see has been diagnosed with diabetes according to the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 90 percent of those people have type 2 diabetes. (Here’s a refresher on the differences between type 1 and type 2 from our friends at EatingWell.)

“Type 2 diabetes also called ‘insulin-resistant diabetes’ typically takes years to develop” says Diana Licalzi MS RD co-founder of Reversing T2D in Boulder Colo. “To understand the process of how this condition progresses from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes it’s important to understand how insulin normally works in our bodies.”

When we eat carbohydrates one of the three major macronutrients along with proteins and fats they are broken down into glucose: our body’s and brain’s preferred energy source. Once glucose enters the bloodstream our pancreas receives a message to release a hormone called insulin. Insulin acts like a key that opens “locks” or channels on the surface of our cells. Once the channels open glucose can flow out of the bloodstream and into our cells and our cells can then use that glucose for energy or store it for later use.
