While food and beverage employment is still declining overall compared to pre-pandemic levels the latest dataset from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows an uneven picture across occupational groups and regions.

More than 1.3 million jobs were added in food preparation and service between 2021 and 2022 but that wasn’t enough to offset the massive job losses in the sector at the start of the pandemic. Employment in the sector is still down 7% from 2019 levels.

The recovery is very uneven across the country. Some metro areas are showing growth (Phoenix Arizona and Jacksonville Florida for example) while others are showing significant declines. For example San Francisco California is down 18% Detroit Michigan and Portland Oregon are down 17%.
