It’s no secret that we love plant-based foods at EatingWell. From fruits vegetables and whole grains to legumes nuts and seeds plant foods provide a variety of nutrients including complex carbohydrates protein fiber antioxidants vitamins and minerals. Many of them also provide healthy fats. Plant-based diets have been shown to have many health benefits including a lower risk of heart disease cancer and diabetes.

Some plant foods contain plant compounds called lignans that act as anti-inflammatory antioxidants and phytoestrogens. If you’ve never heard of phytoestrogens these plant compounds act like estrogen in some tissues of the body. Because estrogen levels drop during menopause eating more phytoestrogen-rich foods may help suppress menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. Many plant foods contain small amounts of lignans but they’re especially concentrated in flaxseeds and sesame seeds.
