In the early 1900s my paternal grandfather sailed from Tamil Nadu to what was then Malaysia as an orphan aged 12. He was part of one of the many waves of immigrants from India mainly men and boys from the southern Indian regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala who were brought to Malaysia by British colonists as indentured labourers to work on rubber plantations in an abusive and exploitative system that coexisted with and eventually replaced slavery. Apart from my grandfather’s brave and arduous journey I don’t know much about him although I have been told that he may have opened the first Indian restaurant in the sleepy port town of Pontian Johor. My father grew up eating many meals at his father’s restaurant which filtered down to my own childhood where curry was always on our dinner table.
