Maria Speck is the award-winning author of Simply Ancient Grains and Ancient Grains for Modern Meals. Simply Ancient Grains won an MFK Fisher Award in the book category. It was selected as a top cookbook by The Washington Post The Huffington Post and on NPR's Here & Now. Maria's first cookbook Ancient Grains for Modern Meals received multiple awards including the Julia Child Award for First Cookbook The Health and Special Diet Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) and a Gourmand Award. Both The New York Times and The Washington Post named Ancient Grains a top cookbook and Cooking Light included it as one of their 100 best cookbooks of the past 25 years.

Maria grew up in Germany and Greece and has had a lifelong passion for whole grains. She is an accomplished journalist and food writer and has contributed to numerous publications in both the US and Germany including The Washington Post Saveur Gourmet EatingWell and Gastronomica. Maria has lectured on whole grains at the Harvard School of Public Health Boston University as part of the annual Jacques Pépin lecture and at the Let's Talk About Food Festival in Boston.
