How to Make Everyday Meatballs | Smitten Kitchen with Deb Perelman

[Guest Photography by Elizabeth Bick!] A few weeks ago over a few glasses of wine my photographer friend Liz and I got to talking about photography at the Smittenkitchen and she mentioned that she would love to come over and take some photos of me at “work.” We started fantasizing about a 50s-style Mad Men-esque shoot with rollers in my hair a pleated but perfectly tailored apron and classic home-cooked dishes. That didn’t quite happen but Liz came over earlier this week (and a few hours later our other friends came over for dinner) and we had a blast. So today please welcome our very first Smittenkitchen guest photographer Elizabeth Bick. I think you’ll be as impressed with her photos as I am. [Oh and in case you’re wondering I cook every day with full lip gloss and an apron that matches my potholders. I can't believe you even asked!]

Living in New York City a place where you barely have to walk 10 blocks to find shaved black truffles with artisanal fries or a foie gras-stuffed date from a chef with his name on the door a few doors down and several items in the freezer aisle I honestly don’t give a damn about making this kind of fuzzy food at home. By the time I’m climbing the 51 flights of stairs to my apartment in two-inch heels lugging three heavy bags a dripping umbrella and a box of books shipped by our house guest all I can think about is the kind of meal that will ruin everything and that meal doesn’t contain a single ingredient that’s cooked sous vide.

I could argue that the whole point of this site is to find a single reliable recipe for each of my favorite comfort foods and in most cases I’ve gotten a little lucky: matzo ball soup macaroni and cheese caesar salad and crumble pie. I’ve even thrown in a few of your own like chicken and dumplings fried chicken and sweet cherry pie. I think we should all be able to make these kinds of things at home whenever we want.
