Michael Behar is a freelance writer and editor based in Boulder Colorado. As a writer Michael has written about innovations in science and technology health and medicine adventure travel extreme sports renewable energy the environment and aviation and space since he began his journalism career in 1991. He is the former science editor of National Geographic. He has also served as a senior editor at Wired an editor-at-large for TED Books a guest writer for Mother Jones and a guest editor for OnEarth.

In 2022 Michael won the James Beard Foundation Journalism Award for his feature “Cultivating Better Health” which he wrote for EatingWell. His writing has appeared in more than 25 national publications including Outside The New York Times Magazine Newsweek Ski Men's Journal Men's Health Bloomberg Businessweek Popular Science The Economist and Smithsonian. Michael is a featured writer on Byliner. He is also a contributing author to the book Imagine Design Create: How Designers Architects and Engineers Are Changing Our World. Michael won a Gold Medal for Feature Writing from the North American Travel Journalists Association in 2012 and the Society of Professional Journalists awarded him First Place for Excellence in Journalism in 2018. Michael's work has also been featured in the anthologies The Best American Travel Writing The Best American Science and Nature Writing Backpacker Hidden Gems: 100 Greatest Undiscovered Hikes Across North America and The Best of Technology Writing.
