I wasn’t always a wine drinker. It took some convincing from my husband to get me to try the one safe merlot I clung to. Silly me. I should have opened the floodgates to wine years ago. Well now I sound like a drunk – at least we got that out of the way.

Simple Traditional White Sangria | Minimalist Baking Recipes

The summer we lived in Portland our friends invited us to their wedding followed by one of the most perfect receptions I have ever attended. There was a tent. There were good friends. There was an angry mob across the street protesting foie gras. There was dancing to bluegrass music even though no one knew what they were doing. It was chaos madness and beauty. There was lemon blueberry chocolate ganache cake two of which I embraced. And there was sangria (the elixir that really got the party started).

Sangria is delicate refreshing and sweet. It’s the perfect afternoon drink and especially delicious for a wine novice who’s not yet used to the dry taste it sometimes leaves behind. It’s colorful it’s beautiful it’s a party in a glass. In other words it’s the unofficial queen of the wine scene.

The first versions of sangria probably date back over 2000 years when the Romans traveled through the Iberian Peninsula planting vineyards along the way. They also fortified unsafe drinking water with herbs and spices from the wine.
