Last year I got a small tattoo on my arm of a shiny red bento box filled with white rice split in half by a small whole grilled fish. On one side the rice is covered in sakura denbu a cherry blossom-pink sauce made from ground cod along with a small pile of glistening soybeans; on the other side the rice is unadorned except for a single umeboshi or pickled plum. The bento is an exact replica of the one in the 1988 Hayao Miyazaki film My Neighbor Totoro . I first saw the film when I was seven and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that scene ever since.

The film is considered by many to be a classic of Japanese animation more commonly known as anime a term used to refer to animated films and television series produced in Japan or inspired by Japanese animation styles. Since the 1960s when hit series like Astro Boy and Speed Racer were adapted and exported to foreign markets the popularity of anime has continued to grow worldwide which has in turn created a sort of subculture of anime fans around the world. But within that community there is a sub-subculture of people like me who enjoy anime food.
