It’s cold the days are short and there’s not much you can do so getting together and enjoying delicious home-cooked food is a great way to spend long winter evenings. Here’s a list of the most popular dishes savoury and sweet desserts and drinks that make up a traditional Serbian Christmas.

Česnica is a central part of the Christmas dinner. It is a type of bread that is made especially for Christmas. Instead of just water flour and yeast like most breads česnica requires additional ingredients: egg yolk buttermilk and sugar which gives it extra flavor and extra calories.

Traditionally two items are placed in the česnica: a coin and a piece of wood. Whoever gets the coin can expect a good and prosperous year and whoever gets the piece of wood is considered hardworking. But instead of cutting this bread it is torn into pieces by hand and eventually someone will find themselves with the piece of wood or the coin.
