Apple experts David and David explain what to do when your iPhone camera is black. This problem can be caused by your iPhone's software or hardware, so the camera is not necessarily broken.

First, close and reopen the Camera app. Sometimes a crash in the Camera app can cause it to appear black. Likewise, if other software on your iPhone crashes, you may be able to fix the problem by restarting your iPhone.

Software crashes are also quite common if you're using a third-party camera app. Try closing and reopening your third-party camera app if you're using one. If it keeps crashing, just delete it: the built-in Camera app is great in its own right.

There are a few other, less common reasons why your iPhone camera is black. If you want to use a social media app like Instagram or Snapchat, you need to allow the app to access the camera. Otherwise, it may appear black when using the app. Second, make sure you don't have any active configuration profiles that might restrict access to your camera.

If none of the steps above work, back up your iPhone and put it in DFU mode.
