It’s a Wednesday afternoon just before Christmas and Daniel and I are stuck in traffic in an Uber on our way home to Queens. He’s just woken up from anesthesia and his right arm is strapped into an absurdly large foam box that’s more of a recliner than a cast meant to protect his newly operated wrist. He’s dizzy and serious shaking from having spent the morning in a cold operating room. His eyes are brighter and greener than I remember. He’s cute and handsome and… he’s somehow inexplicably listing every cut of beef he’s recently tested for a Guinness stew recipe. He keeps listing off cuts of beef I’ve never heard of. For God’s sake he’s just had three hours of surgery is numbed down to his collarbone and all he can talk about is beef?
