How my vegetarian mom's holiday urges complicated my relationship with poultry.
My mother sewed pilgrim costumes for us to wear to every Thanksgiving dinner when I was a kid. I have stained many an oversized white collar of a black dress with turkey gravy and cranberry sauce. But it was one of my mother's other holiday quirks that lived in our dining room…and backyard for years.
Normal people associate Thanksgiving with the smells of turkey skin baking crispy bread maybe onions caramelizing. My earliest memories of it smell of manure hay and feathers. That's because my mother would take me to the car and drove to the nearest live poultry market. Not to buy the bird we were going to roast but to save a turkey or two.
