Chairman Pai explains a recent action taken by the FCC to protect consumers. The FCC has proposed a $37.5 million fine against Affordable Enterprises of Arizona, a Tucson-based company that apparently made more than 2.3 million fraudulent telemarketing calls to Arizonans during a 14-month period in starting in 2016 to sell home improvement and renovation services. The company apparently manipulated caller ID information so that many calls appeared to come from consumers who were not connected to the operation. The calls also appeared to come from unassigned phone numbers and numbers assigned to prepaid “burner” phones. In each case, it appears that the caller ID was spoofed and consumers were unable to identify from the caller ID that the call was from Affordable Enterprises.
