A few tweaks to the average chocolate chip cookie recipe make these cookies taste a little more chewy and nutty thanks to ingredients like old-fashioned rolled oats and cinnamon which add a hint of tangy sweetness without overwhelming the flavor. Like most traditional oatmeal cookies these are a little chewy but still pleasantly soft. The chocolate chips add richness and creamy texture making these cookies deliciously irresistible. While raisins or other dried fruit in cookies is a hot topic you can easily substitute half the chocolate chips with raisins to please those who love them. Chopped nuts are also a great addition. Just be careful not to overload your cookie with extra ingredients or you risk a dry cookie.

Oatmeal chocolate cookies

An important note for this cookie recipe and all baking is to measure your flour correctly. Be careful not to overbake these cookies. They should be firm on the edges and puffy in the middle. It is better to underbake them slightly than to risk overbaking them and drying them out. Chilling the dough for this recipe is ideal but if you are short on time you can skip this step and get straight to baking. Keep a close eye on the cookies they may need 1-2 minutes less in the oven. This is also a great recipe to make gluten-free. Replace the all-purpose flour with gluten-free 1-to-1 flour. The gluten-free version may need 1-2 minutes more in the oven.
