Ask Dr. Mike: Steel Cut vs. Rolled Oats

What is the difference between steel-cut and rolled oats? Steel-cut oats are small pieces of oat groats that have been roasted. Groats are oat kernels that have been dehulled. They are thicker and contain more fiber than rolled oats. Rolled oats on the other hand are thinner because they have been cut steamed and rolled flat.

Steel cut oats also tend to have a longer cooking time because they are less processed and have a denser consistency. Rolled oats come together faster and don’t have the same signature nutty flavor. However both are great additions to any meal.

When you think of oatmeal chances are you think of oatmeal. And for good reason. The thin starchy oatmeal cooks quickly and has a warm flavor that works well in many recipes. Their ease and flavor are key to their appeal and set them apart from their steel-cut counterparts.
