💀 Day of the Dead for Kids | November 1-2 | Dia de los Muertos | Twinkl USA

"I finally understood why the dead come back for food. The hunger that drives them is a hunger for us…"

In third grade our class built an altar for Día de Muertos. My stack of tissue paper (to make papel picado) contained all the colors in their most saturated form. If I could I would have run through the streets of Mexico City with the entire rainbow rack screaming with joy. I folded tissue paper cut off corners cut shapes on the edges and when I unfolded it—magic!—an unpredictable and wild pattern emerged. I fell in love with my bright lace creations.

Later my classmates and I happily scattered fresh cempasúchil leaves to mark a path from the classroom door to the altar. Our teacher and volunteer parents placed pan de muerto tamales hot chocolate and sugar skulls on the pink and purple altar layers. They lit candles. One father placed three bottles of Coca-Cola next to a black-and-white photo of a woman’s radiant face. Our class learned that we offer food to lure the dead back to us guided by the candles the bright orange of the cempasúchil and the radiant joy of each color.
