Roasting Chestnuts in the Oven | 1-Minute Tips
The fir eats / Maxwell Cozzi
Beloved in Italy from autumn onwards some claim that the best way to roast chestnuts is over hot coals in an open fire or an outdoor roasting pit. If that’s not practical Italians roast them over a gas burner in a simple iron pan with a perforated base allowing the flames to hit the chestnuts. If you don’t have a special chestnut roasting pan or a gas burner don’t despair. No special equipment is needed to roast them in your own oven.
Roasted chestnuts can be eaten on their own as a festive winter snack or as an after-dinner treat. They pair well with young wines such as a fruity Italian vino novello or a French Beaujolais Nouveau. From turkey stuffing to pies and other desserts you can also use them in a variety of chestnut recipes. A simple side dish that is perfect to serve with chestnuts is roasted Brussels sprouts. After the Brussels sprouts are roasted toss them with halved roasted chestnuts an additional tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and salt to taste.
