Simple Recipes / Mark Beahm

I love color. I don’t like candy. Odd because it seems like someone who loves bright colors as much as I do should absolutely love candy. Candy is luminous! When I’m in the rainbow embrace of a candy store or an extravagant cake display I imagine shrinking down to inhabit these mischievous saturated worlds. The joy fades however as soon as the candy touches my mouth. It’s not that I hate the taste it’s just not nearly as pleasant as the colors promise.

Day of the Dead comes in bright colors in festive colors in colors that transcend death. First there is cempasúchil yellow meant to guide the dead to our altars. There is papel picado in hot pink purple orange indigo sky blue green yellow aqua lime fuchsia violet. There are intricately decorated skulls sugar and ceramic. There is food. There are lit candles waving their flames in hello. Forget the darkness! Day of the Dead is about light light that bounces off color that shines off candles light that blows off food the most tempting of pan de muerto. If I were dead I would travel back for pan de muerto.
