The pickleback is a very interesting whiskey shot and a drink that you have to experience for yourself. It is incredibly simple – a shot of Jameson followed by a shot of pickle juice – and it is without a doubt one of the most popular shots ordered in bars around the world.

Pickleback shot

Pickle-brined whiskey is nothing new; it's long been one of those "hair of the dog" hangover cures. But it wasn't until 2006 that Brooklyn bartender Reggie Cunningham gave the shot its now-famous name at Bushwick Country Club. It didn't take long for the drink to become a hit spreading across the U.S. and beyond.

The combination is strange but it works surprisingly well. Even if you’re not a fan of pickles it’s a drink you’ll want to try because it has a rich umami flavor that you won’t find in any other drink. You don’t have to go to the bar for it either. You can experience the pickles at home even with that jar of Vlasic pickles in your fridge.

"The pickleback seems like an unlikely combination but it actually brings together two of the best things in life: whiskey and vinegar. Whether it's actually a hangover cure or an efficient way to pick yourself up is still up for debate but don't get hung up on that. Just enjoy this feast of flavors." —Tom Macy
