Can I admit something? I had only cooked beans from start to finish once before testing this recipe. And that’s because I’m not normally the type to prepare dinners hours in advance or prep large quantities of food for later use.

However I do recognize the value of cooking your own beans. For starters many canned products are high in salt and often contain preservatives and other additives (like BPA) that aren’t great for you in large doses. Not to mention that cooking your own beans is significantly cheaper making it much more cost-effective than buying canned beans.

Plus these pinto beans are really easy (only 10 ingredients and 1 pot required). And the prep time is really only 15-20 minutes since the soaking and cooking takes place while you do other things. If I can do it you can too. Let me show you how!

We have found that 6-8 hours is the optimal time to soak dried pinto beans. The longer you soak them the more tender they will become and the more likely they are to split and fall apart when cooked.
