Starting with what's new, it may look like a 1st generation Pixel Watch from the outside, largely because… well… it's almost identical. There is only a very slight change in the material composition itself, rather than the overall design of the unit. Here's everything new or different about the Pixel Watch 2 compared to the Pixel Watch 1:
– New 100% recycled aluminum housing
– Increased durability of the protective glass
– Now 10% lighter (weight) thanks to the new aluminum housing
– Increased battery life to “full 24 hours” in always-on display mode
– The Pixel Watch 2 will now run WearOS 4 (the Pixel Watch 1 also received this update recently)
– New 4-core processor to increase performance
– Faster charging times: 12 hours of use in 30 minutes of charging
– Added Google Assistant monitoring capability to now query health/fitness stats
– Added watch backup and restore and phone transfer
– Added a real-time security check feature, alerting emergency contacts if you don't check in
– Added medical ID to monitor, allowing first responders to see medical information
– Added 6 new watch face styles
– New heart rate sensor: moving to a new “multipath heart rate module design” with 5 photodiodes and 5 LEDs, as well as better spacing/coverage
– New skin temperature sensor (upgrade from previous method of non-dedicated sensor)
– Added a new dermatological skin sensor, enabling the Fitbit Body response function
– New monitoring zone stimulation and heart rate features
– New automatic workout detection for 7 new workout/sport types
– Added irregular heart rate notifications in the background
– Modification of the charger design, towards a non-wireless model
– Three colors offered, price is 349 for WiFi models and 399 for cellular models
– Includes 6 months of Fitbit Premium
– Water resistance up to 50m remains the same, also compatible with existing watch straps
Instead, as you can see, most of the new changes here, less visible from the outside, are actually internal sensor changes. In particular, focus on the three new health sensors: new heart rate sensor, new skin temperature sensor, new skin dermatological sensor. The first of these three claims to significantly increase heart rate accuracy, while the other two add these readings/trends into the Fitbit app. Previously, they detected skin temperature via proxy estimation, which was not as accurate.
