Before you jump in, make sure you have an Apple Silicon Mac, preferably running macOS 14 Sonoma for the best experience. A higher spec Mac with 16GB of RAM will perform even better. Also keep in mind that games can take up a significant amount of space, so make sure you have plenty of free storage. The first step is to download Whiskey, a small application that will ask you to install Rosetta 2, Apple's translation technology, essential for running Windows software. This download totals over 400 MB.
Now, go to the Steam website and download the Windows version of Steam. Whiskey uses WINE and WINE bottles are self-contained environments that allow Windows applications to run on non-Windows operating systems. Create a new bottle, open the C drive and drag SteamSetup.exe into the drive_c folder. Return to Whiskey, click Run and select SteamSetup to complete the setup process. Log in to your Steam account. Install games as usual. While some older titles may not work, you'll find that many DirectX 11 and 12 games work seamlessly, giving you an awesome gaming experience on your Apple Silicon Mac. Be sure to check the game compatibility resources mentioned below to stay informed of supported titles as Whiskey continues to evolve.
