This time last year this blog didn’t exist. I was working in a coffee shop in a city I despised. John was only halfway through his law degree – which he hated – and “our life” as we had planned it just wasn’t what we had hoped for. The funny thing is our circumstances were all the result of decisions we had made actively or passively. And despite our careful planning and foresight we just weren’t happy with the direction we were headed. We all know what to do in these situations: stay positive and keep putting one foot in front of the other even when the road ahead looks bleak.

But on New Year's Eve 2011 we did the exact opposite.

As we sat in our third-floor one-bedroom apartment with the curtains open listening to the sound of rain tapping against the walls of our building and fireworks going off in the distance we talked about our lives: what we wanted what we didn't want what it would take to get there what was holding us back and whether it was possible to achieve it.

The conversation was one of the best we’d ever had a conversation that honestly changed the course of our lives as a married couple and as individuals forever. That night we decided that if we don’t like something we’ll change it and if we want to do something—whether it’s something as small as starting a website or something as big as traveling the world—we’ll find a way to do it. From the outside we may seem like crazy people. But if we’re doing what we love does it really matter?
