I know I know. “Deb what’s the point of posting a summer cocktail recipe the day after a lovely long weekend?” Ah but I think you’re going about this all wrong; this drink is actually three days early for next weekend.

Or maybe 365 days too late for the last time I awkwardly waxed poetic about this drink that was denied access during a summer pregnancy. It’s nothing short of summer in a glass. It tastes like lemonade. It tastes like iced tea. It’s got crunchy cucumber slices and a dash of 7-Up (for a little low-brow fizz you know?) in a tall glass of ice and if that didn’t convince you — and seriously how could it not? — then hopefully the name will.

It's called the Porch Swing and they make it at a St. Louis/Kansas City/Memphis/North Carolina/Texas-style BBQ joint called Blue Smoke. Back when I worked nearby and wasn't up at 9:30 and asleep at 9:30 every day we would sometimes come over on a weeknight just because we could and I'd order the iceberg wedge and a pulled pork sandwich and one of these. We'd sit back and imagine having wraparound porches with creaky old swings and overgrown lawns and warm weather that was somehow more bearable because there was a breeze blowing through it. I can't get over how lazy our lives were back then and I won't lie I miss it terribly sometimes. Maybe not yesterday a day that started with me bursting out laughing because my husband had completed his third rescue mission of the day because this tiny human assigned to us had slid himself under a piece of furniture and re-secured his 95th percentile head and ended with a Porch Swing reunion that warded off the heat wave. It had been far too long.
