About this course

Many early childhood educators report feeling ill-equipped to meet the needs of children with challenging behavior and frustrated in their attempts to develop a safe and stimulating early childhood learning environment. If you work with young children, you are not alone in your feelings! Growing evidence suggests that an effective approach to addressing behavior problems is to adopt a model focused on promoting social-emotional development, supporting children's appropriate behavior, and preventing challenging behaviors. In this course, you will learn a framework for addressing the social and emotional development and challenging behaviors of young children.

The overarching goal of this course is to learn evidence-based practices to support the social and emotional development of infants and young children. We will read current research on the developmental trajectory of children exhibiting early aggressive behaviors; models of positive behavior support programs; and intervention efforts that promote positive mental health in early childhood. Evidence-based classroom management skills will also be studied, and you will leave the course with a solid understanding of how to design supportive environments. This course incorporates a community with which you can learn from others, share your own current approaches and discuss your attempts to integrate learnings from this course into your early years practice.

Once you have completed this course, you will be able to:

Identify developmental stages of social and emotional development, from infants to young children.
Identify interactions between adult children that are emotionally supportive and build positive relationships.
Describe classroom management skills that prevent challenging behaviors and increase active engagement in early learning.
Observe and record an assessment of a child's functional behavior in a child care setting.
Write an individualized behavioral support plan based on the results of the functional behavior assessment.
Adopt evidence-based adult-child interactions that prevent challenging behaviors and increase social and skills for young children.
