It’s been a little quiet around here this week and I bet you can already guess why: moving is the easy part! Moving hoo boy. You walk into an empty new house with freshly painted walls and nothing but possibilities. You’re running from room to room man! Then your stuff arrives and the pristine landscape is forever tarnished. The first few boxes aren’t so bad: you prioritize bedding toilet paper toothbrushes and whiskey (er play around with that one.) The next few boxes are also fairly doable: glasses go where they always are books go on bookcases and lamps go on tables. But then you finally get to the last six boxes and you look around and realize that the closets dressers and shelves are all full so where does this go? That’s when if you’re anything like us the great unraveling begins: how did we get to a place with so much stuff? I thought we’d resist the lure of consumption (says she who just bought what can only be described as a fancy ice cube tray). How did I get to a point in my life where I have 125 cookie cutters 9 shades of sanding sugar and cupcake liners in at least 7 patterns that I can’t bring myself to throw away or justify the space they take up? Those last 6 boxes take forever to unpack; you’ll be glad you prioritized the whiskey.

And on top of all this something else happened: my husband — who has the audacity to look younger and more handsome every year — turned 40. If you heard me freak out a little about our move being postponed for a week it was because we wanted to have people over for drinks and then go out to dinner for vodka on ice and tableside chopped liver. But 24 hours after the move that’s exactly what happened and of course it wasn’t a big deal and forced us to quickly finish the first half of the boxes. Happy birthday sweetheart: don’t you feel young after a few days of moving furniture and lugging boxes?

My mom came over on Thursday to help pack but we were actually making a birthday cake for Alex. The general rule for Alex's birthday cakes is "chocolate and…" It can be ice cream or layer cake; it can be peanut butter coffee or caramel or hazelnuts; it just has to start and end with chocolate. So we decided to make Martha Stewart's raspberry swirl cheesecake but with a chocolate crust and a pool of ganache on top but it turned out so visually stunning (and fun) that we couldn't bring ourselves to cover it. The trick and maybe you food styling types already knew this but it really blew us away. Something I found in an old Martha video is to put individual drops of raspberry sauce on top and then swirl them with a toothpick or skewer. It's literally impossible not to make a beautiful cake with this method and my mom and I maybe abnormally to other people but pretty much straight up expected of us were excited about it.

What happened next is something I’m not so proud of: we almost forgot about the cake. What? It’s been a busy week! I understand that this is a breach of the cheesecake contract that we probably don’t even deserve cheesecake anymore after showing it so little respect but still on a Wednesday night four days after my husband’s 40th birthday we were sitting outside (the only place we can avoid the view of the unpacked chaos) with friends with slices of cheesecake on our laps and it was perfect. Our neighbors were sitting on the deck next door so we brought them some too. I’m starting to think we’re going to like it here.
