BBQ Rub Recipe – How to Make Your Own BBQ Rub

Spice rubs are expensive often in the form of a small container of spices mixed with salt and sugar. It’s easy (and cheaper!) to make a batch of your own spice rub that you can store in your pantry for months. I wanted to create a balanced barbecue rub that would work well with a wide variety of grilled meats and vegetables whether you’re slow cooking ribs or pulled pork or grilling chicken or even tofu. This is the rub I always keep in a deli container in my pantry.

This rub is a relatively simple blend that consists primarily of paprika which lends a savory earthiness and a round fruity note and brown sugar which provides some molasses complexity in addition to the obvious sweetness. There’s enough salt in the mix to provide the necessary spice while smaller amounts of additional spices and dried herbs like mustard seed black pepper coriander seed dried oregano granulated garlic and granulated onion add complexity and depth. This isn’t a particularly hot rub so if you want more heat feel free to add a little cayenne or other chili pepper punch; alternatively you can tailor this rub to any flavor profile you like whether that’s a bit of cumin funk or a dash of chipotle powder or smoked paprika for a hint of wood fire.
