I grew up in the rolling hills of Piedmont North Carolina where almost everyone had a garden. We lived in the suburbs but every summer my mother would put the fruits and vegetables from our robust garden—canned tomatoes bread and butter pickles and lots of grated zucchini—in the freezer waiting for quick bread when the weather turned cold.
Backyards filled our plates and pantries all summer long. And just as August rolled around and we thought it couldn’t get any warmer the weather broke. The garden became a tangle of past-their-best vines as the days grew shorter and the nights cooler.
