How to Make an Italian Hot Chocolate Recipe (Cioccolata Calda)
Simple Recipes / Shilpa Iyer
When I was 11 my family spent a month living in a friend’s small still-under-construction villa in Tuscany. We spent the time driving through fields of fallen sunflowers seeing the sights in nearby towns and villages and eating every type of pasta we could find. But my strongest food memory from that trip is my introduction to cioccolata calda Italian hot chocolate.
When my mother put it down in front of me in a small quiet café in the hilltop village of Trequanda I didn’t know what to make of it. The chocolate was glossy and dark brown and so thick it was more like a pudding than a drink. I didn’t even know how to drink it and started asking for a spoon to help me scoop it up.
