Lángos Bread Recipe (Hungarian Baked Bread)

Lángos is a classic Hungarian fried bread sold everywhere by street carts and vendors. It can be topped with a variety of ingredients but is most often eaten plain. This airy and light fairground favorite is made from yeast dough and often with extra mashed potatoes to make krumplis lángos (potato -langos) make.

Traditionally when Hungarians baked bread in communal stone ovens they would save a piece of dough and bake it in the morning for breakfast. This breakfast bread gradually developed into a fried snack like those in other countries with similar cultural backgrounds to Hungary such as Turkey Serbia Slovakia Romania Czech Republic and Austria.

These popular snacks are usually served with garlic and sprinkled with salt. Some other combinations include sour cream onions kefir sausage eggs yogurt cheese ham or bacon. Our tasty recipe uses the addition of potatoes and serves it with garlic and salt. This delicious bread is a great accompaniment to soups such as korhelyleves and delicious to enjoy on its own. Eat the lángos freshly made because it gets mushy when cold; if you have made too much dough and do not have to fry many slices you can store the dough in the refrigerator for up to a week.
