Rutabagas are a root vegetable and are sometimes called Swedish turnip. You can use rutabagas as you would almost any other root vegetable which means they make a great substitute for mashed potatoes and are also delicious when mashed with potatoes. The recipe comes together very quickly and you can do the mashing directly in the pan you cooked them in. Save some of the cooking water if you want to thin them out a bit after mashing and adding butter salt and pepper.

Mashed Kohlrabi | Easy Side Dish Recipe | MOLCS Easy Recipes
Rutabagas belong to the Brassica genus and are considered an ancient cross between a turnip and a cabbage. They are slightly sweeter than turnips but still have a bitter flavor; some describe the taste as bittersweet. Serve these mashed rutabagas as a side dish with any meat or poultry dish (think roasted chicken) or with a ham or stew.
"The mashed turnip has a buttery texture and the amount of spices is just amazing! I always forget that peeling and cutting a turnip is not as intimidating as it first seems. I just cut off the ends and then peeled off the waxy skin with a Y-peeler." —Victoria Heydt
