This past weekend we had an impromptu road trip. We jumped in the car and decided to drive south to Los Angeles. It felt great. I packed a small overnight bag a pair of shoes a hot thermos of White Peony Bai Mudan and a small cake. I think we’ve talked about this before but I like the combination of road trips and cake. Small tasty uncomplicated springy cakes. The kind of cakes you can cut with a pocket knife while enjoying those little moments that make driving instead of flying worthwhile. Like watching the sunrise light up the picturesque palm-fringed hills west of the freeway or stretching out in the bright sunshine at a rest stop. To me the definition of a special occasion.
