How to make Lussekatter I Amazing Swedish Saffron Buns
December 13 St. Lucy's Day also called the Festival of Lights is a holiday in Sweden in the spirit of Advent and Christmas. Young girls are dressed in white robes with a red sash with one girl chosen as "Lucia" who wears a crown of burning candles (or battery-powered candles) while the others carry one candle. There are many processions with singing and merrymaking.
Once home the eldest girl changes into a sash and a chandelier and brings her parents coffee and lussekatter (S-shaped saffron buns) for breakfast.
This was recently explained to me by a young Swedish woman named Lisa Persson who is in college here in Sacramento far from home. She spoke of these saffron buns with such nostalgia that I just had to make them.
