Previous installments in the franchise mainly concern a group of people fighting against the Umbrella Corporation, a pharmaceutical company that develops the T-Virus and other mutagens for their secret research/"bio-organic weapons". Mutagens can turn humans into zombies as well as mutate other animals and plants into horrible monsters.
The original game and many franchise entries are set in and around Raccoon City, a fictional town in the American Midwest. The city and surrounding areas are home to several bioengineering laboratories owned by the Umbrella Corporation, which develop viruses for use in biological warfare. One of the laboratories, unnamed in the video game series and called "The Hive" in the film adaptations, is located beneath Raccoon City and is where the T-Virus is developed. As Umbrella's mutagenic tests gain momentum and the virus has infiltrated Raccoon City, STARS officers and other characters fight through the monsters ravaging the city to investigate the involvement of Umbrella in the catastrophe. Raccoon City is ultimately destroyed by a thermobaric missile strike launched by the United States government to contain the viral outbreak. An ensuing government investigation leads to Umbrella's downfall. However, the proliferation of Umbrella's biological weapons and viruses leads to other outbreaks across the world. The protagonists of each subsequent entry continue to fight new factions that engage in bioterrorism and also face new types of creatures.
