There are cookbooks and websites that seem to be inspired by foods you might hypothetically crave after consuming a smokable plant that’s now decriminalized in dozens of states. And then there’s the Smitten Kitchen where recipes are usually motivated by irrational cravings or lack of self-control. On days like these I’m pretty sure our different paths have led us to the same place.

Ice cream sandwiches | Basic with Babish

By now you may be familiar with matzo crack which is what happens when you raise the aptly named “bread of misery” to what should be its most deprivation-free vocation: butter brown sugar sea salt dark chocolate and toasted nuts. In the Passover off-season i.e. most of the time I find it even more delicious with saltine crackers. Baked cooled and broken into pieces it’s crunchy buttery and caramelized and I can’t be in the same room with it without degrading myself so I sometimes hide it from myself in the freezer. Which has led me to a conclusion you might have predicted: that it tastes pretty good frozen.

If this story sounds familiar it’s because I confessed the same thing last year: that years of hiding brownies in the freezer for ourselves had actually turned us into people who prefer them chewy fudgy and extra cold. So I embraced it using two thin sheets of brownies as bookends for a perfect ice cream sandwich. Since I didn’t learn my lesson this year I’m making do with my other favorite freezer stash.

I don’t mean to imply that anyone would enjoy this kind of thing. Sheets of salted cracker toffee covered in dark chocolate and studded with roasted nuts as a vanilla ice cream sandwich? Right only a monster would enjoy something like that. Or worse a heavily pregnant monster a 5.5 year old and a husband who loves chocolate and ice cream above all else. Wow I just realized that there is no one in my household who could talk me into throwing my calorie-decadent recipe off a ledge these days. But hey I guess you could say I did something right.
