The inspiration for this apple pie came shortly after I posted a Shaker lemon pie earlier this year. I came across a book about Shaker life and design in a used bookstore. My head was still in Shaker world so I picked it up. It was a large book the most comprehensive I’d ever come across with entire sections on communal living Shaker tools and even a page on growing flowers. On the subject of flowers Shakers traditionally didn’t grow them for beauty or decoration but only for their culinary or medicinal uses.
