The tomatoes I find in the grocery store and at the farmers market always look perfect: they are shiny and spotless. That is not always the case with home-grown tomatoes from a planter or garden which can often be misshapen vary in size and shape and even crack.

After speaking with a food scientist I recently learned that it is normal for tomatoes to burst as they ripen on the vine. Here’s what I learned about why tomatoes burst and whether they are safe to eat.
