Quick and Easy Tips to Improve Your Food Photography

The right background can add so much to a photo.

This is perhaps the most important factor when shooting still life images such as food. Choose a well-lit location such as a window with indirect light. You can diffuse the light coming from a certain direction with white curtains or blinds. Professional photographers can create “daylight” with their lighting equipment. If your camera has a rotating flash bouncing extra light off the ceiling or wall will help control shadows. Trying to photograph a dish with the flash pointed directly at the subject will often result in shadows and the food itself will often appear flat. Wet or shiny areas on the food can reflect and create “sparkle” areas that are undesirable.
