Please tell me this isn’t just me: you know when you love a dish so much that you can’t even risk ordering it when you’re out for dinner because it’s so often disappointing? I’m a hopeless child of the 80s and 90s tiramisu is one of my top five desserts but I almost never eat it for this messy reason. At its best it’s little squares of cake nearly saturated with bracing espresso then buried in a cream made ethereally light and airy by the unholy amount of mascarpone and generously dusted with cocoa or shaved unsweetened chocolate between each layer. The sum of the parts is not overly sweet but quite rich ideal in small doses. It’s heaven.

Tiramisu

The obvious solution would be to make it at home and for the kids and for this site we did it a lot. Almost every dinner party we had was an excuse to refine my recipe and if you had told me that there was a not so distant future where I would realise that it had been almost ten years since I had last made it I would have thought you had completely lost it. But here we are and the reality is that good tiramisu the only kind I want to get involved with contains the following things that are not exactly child-friendly or kid-friendly:

Very strong espresso Marsala or rum or both you're lucky Raw eggs multiple

…Which has severely limited my tiramisu intake over the past 8 years or so. It’s funny how I’m totally okay with making something for dinner that my husband and I want to eat that the kids might not like (it helps to wear earplugs to drown out the complaints) (just kidding!) (sort of) but a big pot of chocolate-covered dessert that the kids aren’t allowed to touch? Even by my standards that’s grossly unacceptable. [“Yay! You made chocolate cake pudding!” “Not for you honey.”]
