How to Clean a Garbage Disposer with Ice | Fix a Smelly Garbage Disposer

What kind of things do you grind up in your garbage disposal? Whether it’s vegetable scraps and banana peels or leftovers from dinner little bits of food always seem to linger. And the kitchen sink can harbor some of the most dangerous bacteria in the home since that’s often where we clean or prepare raw meats and produce. The disposal can be teeming with salmonella E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Plus that’s where you wash your hands flushing even more bacteria down the drain and into the disposal. It’s no wonder that your garbage disposal can smell like something crawled in there and died.

Even if you regularly flush the drain with hot water this is not enough to properly clean your drain and remove the penetrating odors.

“Running very hot water helps reduce the number of microorganisms present but it may not remove the food particles that serve as a food source for microorganism growth” says Martin Bucknavage a food safety expert in Penn State's Department of Food Sciences.
